The rules given for Gan Eden were simple: do not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
They ate.
They were punished.
Today, we all know the rules, right?
Do we?
If you are not accepting your role in Torah, and following that role, then you are a rebel. Rebellion against the structure set up by YHVH.
How is rebellion dealt with?
Cut off. Swept away. Gone.
Rebellion is what Almighty hates most -- so don't be a rebel. Right?

A couple of things at play here.
The fruit is attractive and maybe (We would have to eat it to make sure) good to eat. We the people will be proven as rebels against God if we disobey and eat the attractive fruit.
The priests are attractive to us because they are the highest level God gave man to communicate with God. After the apple proved that we're rebels, God gave us Torah, a more elaborate explanation as to why its not a good idea to eat the apple and why its a good idea to obey God.
If you look at humanity as those looking at the apple, desiring it and the priests and their 'hood' as the apple, its easy to understand why many claim the priesthood to be dead, no more, a gonner. It creates a position, a job vacancy, a job for a 'Torah Teacher' call him or her a rabbi or just someone with an opinion. But the priesthood is for all eternity and flows through the veins of priests, even today.
Knowing that every living part of creation is content in its position in Torah, having its sacred role as a legitimate contributor to the system God created, should encourage you to find your place and be content with it and stop the bickering and nit-picking of Torah.
God doesn't favor those who rebel against God. You're not on solid ground if you fit that bill. Rather, find peace in your place, wherever that is.
Also, the priesthood is incomplete without a community supporting it. Here is the irony:
The 'Torah' community wants a priest, maybe more than one if possible, but the community also questions the authority of the priests, the authority, opinions and explanations of Torah and the legitimacy of the priest himself. So you have a priest, but you have no supporting community. Who will make the priests garments? Are you insisting that the priest make his own garments?
If you understand that everyone and everything has its role in Torah and if you can accept your role, whatever that may be, then the system God gave Israel, the land, will live on and all the world will be blessed, according to God. Or you can keep arguing and bickering and nit-picking Torah and enjoy the curses of all the world for all time. Its a choice, remember the apple.
